Mingling on a Monday
Lunch appointments usually happen during mid week for me, but when a friend who happens to own a business comes to town, you have to leave the office no matter what the day.
I took the bus and headed to 40th and 3rd in midtown Manhattan. We met at the corner, then entered Dock’s, a retaurant with lots of seafood on the menu. We talked about family and business while sipping chowder. When the main course arrived, we got down to business.
“How do you sell your CDs?”
“Where do you promote your newsletter?”
“How did you get that speaking engagement?”
The questions bounced across the table as if we were auditioning for reverse Jeopardy. And we took notes between bites. How else do you walk away with new marketing ideas? In three hours, I learned more from her than at all the networking meetings I’d attended all year. Yes, a three-hour lunch. When a friend comes in from across the country, that’s how long lunches are, especially when you don’t get out often.
One thing she shared made total sense. “Your 1,000-person newsletter should be distributed to 10,000 people.” She’s so right. It costs the same amount of money, especially because it’s published online. It makes so much more sense when someone else points out the obvious.
I wrote more notes on the trip back to the office. Everything will be in place this week. Then the real work starts.

Creating and Sending Online Brochures
Direct Marketing News, also known as DM News, reported that the Phoenix Visitors Bureau is now sending out their brochures by Email rather than send brochures by postal mail.
This allows them to reach potential tourists quicker and keeps those visitors interested in the information they’ve viewed on the bureau’s Web site.
The lightbulb finally went on over my head. Many of my Web site visitors still ask for a brochure even though they’ve obviously been to the site. I have a brochure that I send by postal mail, but only for a fee. I’ll not only convert the brochure into an Emailable product, but I’ll also look into Web companies who can send this Email automatically rather than have me manually send each request.
The Phoenix Bureau uses an agency, but I can only imagine the cost. But if an agency has the technology, other more-affordable online sites should, too.
