Efficiency is Key to Solo Success

Look around your office. Is it as orderly as conceived the first day you set up shop? Are you able to work “from the seat of your pants,” with necessities positioned at arm’s length from your chair?

Solo business owners must develop a higher sense of organization than traditional employees. We have no one to ask for an extra copy of something that’s lost in a pile of papers. It’s all on us to coordinate. The alternative is wasted time, confusion, and the worst - lost sales.

Reviewing your office space to add or subtract organizational products and supplies takes little time, especially in comparison to daily chaos.

My office desk is positioned in the center of the room. The printer is on my right. Paper, labels, and other printing supplies are on shelves beneath the printer. Software stays in a draw to my right, under the printer.

Business checks, notecards (to write frequent thank-you cards), and project binders are on shelves beneath the computer. A dictionary, thesaurus, external computer backup, and writing instruments are housed in shelves above the computer.

My desk holds the Palm and cradle, small basket to store three telephones, and remote control for a stereo alongside another wall (why get up to change the channel?).

Every solo professional requires a certain amount of space to work efficiently. The way the space is organized is critical to maintain easy access to everything that makes you money.

This month, consider adding a full review of the office space to your project list. The entire job doesn’t need to be complete in one day. I find myself at top efficiency when designating 10-15 minutes a day for organizing. By week’s end, an investment of 75 minutes has produced big changes, all for the better.
