Podcasting - Another Marketing Tool for Consideration

This weekend I attended PodCamp NYC, the first New York podcasting conference and I’m sure not the last. It was well organized and offered dozens of seminars, all revolving around the art of reaching your audience through audio.

I blogged about podcasting last year during my week-long series on online marketing tools. However, I didn’t add podcasting to my own marketing arsenal because I believe in creating a long-term plan before adding this type of project to a business.

You can buy a microphone, record information, and make it available to clients, but how does it extend your reach? That’s the question, and until it’s answered, there’s no reason to begin podcasting. In the meantime, it’s smart to learn more about it and how to make it part of your marketing campaign, as I did this weekend.

There were so many sessions in each time slot that it was difficult to decide what to attend. I’m not one to listen to half of one seminar and then go to another to catch the last half, so I chose specific topics after reading descriptions on the Podcamp NYC Wiki.

Greg Demetrick of Webfluency introduced us to the world of podcasting, telling us why it’s done and showing the tools today’s podcasters use to reach their audiences. Jason Van Orden provided great explanation on how podcasting and blogging work together. I was amazed at how many people at that seminar were not blogging or knowledgeable about it.

The podcast monetization seminar was standing room only. There was more than one, and I bet the others were just as filled. At the end, we all learned that while some podcasters are making sponsorship deals, the opportunities are still wide open.

Before the event began, I stopped to talk with Bill Cammack of ReelSolid.tv. Bill is super adept at creating and editing videos. He videotaped me at PodCamp NYC. I usually critique myself to death, but I enjoyed watching the playback.

If you’re interested in knowing more about podcasting or learning about each session at PodCamp NYC, notes from each seminar are supposed to be on the site. Look for them and learn more about the art of adding audio to your marketing plan. It’s an opportunity open to every solo marketer.
