Podcasting - Another Marketing Tool for Consideration
This weekend I attended PodCamp NYC, the first New York podcasting conference and I’m sure not the last. It was well organized and offered dozens of seminars, all revolving around the art of reaching your audience through audio.
I blogged about podcasting last year during my week-long series on online marketing tools. However, I didn’t add podcasting to my own marketing arsenal because I believe in creating a long-term plan before adding this type of project to a business.
You can buy a microphone, record information, and make it available to clients, but how does it extend your reach? That’s the question, and until it’s answered, there’s no reason to begin podcasting. In the meantime, it’s smart to learn more about it and how to make it part of your marketing campaign, as I did this weekend.
There were so many sessions in each time slot that it was difficult to decide what to attend. I’m not one to listen to half of one seminar and then go to another to catch the last half, so I chose specific topics after reading descriptions on the Podcamp NYC Wiki.
Greg Demetrick of Webfluency introduced us to the world of podcasting, telling us why it’s done and showing the tools today’s podcasters use to reach their audiences. Jason Van Orden provided great explanation on how podcasting and blogging work together. I was amazed at how many people at that seminar were not blogging or knowledgeable about it.
The podcast monetization seminar was standing room only. There was more than one, and I bet the others were just as filled. At the end, we all learned that while some podcasters are making sponsorship deals, the opportunities are still wide open.
Before the event began, I stopped to talk with Bill Cammack of ReelSolid.tv. Bill is super adept at creating and editing videos. He videotaped me at PodCamp NYC. I usually critique myself to death, but I enjoyed watching the playback.
If you’re interested in knowing more about podcasting or learning about each session at PodCamp NYC, notes from each seminar are supposed to be on the site. Look for them and learn more about the art of adding audio to your marketing plan. It’s an opportunity open to every solo marketer.

Blogging Conferences Extend Your Marketing Reach
Attending last month’s BlogHer Conference in New York was a magical experience.
I use that word because the mix of individuals from highly-regarded companies (Blip.tv, Chitika, Hewlett-Packard, Google, and others) with intriguing seminar topics guaranteed two days of smart marketing ideas for solo business owners and firms of all size.
Several men attended, and their voices added to the well-rounded event.
Three things I learned at BlogHer:
1. Dina Kaplan of Blip.tv gave me a crash course in how to upload video to their servers and, at the same time, make it available on YouTube and other social spaces. My mind is spinning with video marketing ideas for Internet distribution.
2. Angela LoSasso, who was nicknamed “The Hewlett-Packard Lady,” pointed me to an area on HP’s site with instructional details on digital cameras. This was useful not only for me to capture better marketing photographs but also to share on the Laughing Chow site.
3. Lena West of xynoMedia Technology gave me a million dollar marketing idea by phone after the conference. I can’t share it with you, but I will be following her instructions the moment I finish my book next week. This is an example of the connections made at such an event.
If you’re considering attending a blogging conference, I urge you to seriously consider it. BlogHer was about blogging, but for me, everything centered around marketing.
Liz Strauss of Successful Blog will speak at SOBCon in Chicago, and Des Walsh of Thinking Home Business will speak at BlogWorld & New Media Expo in Las Vegas.
Consider attending one or both. You’ll exit after making many new friends and documenting a year’s worth of marketing tips to increase your revenue.

5 Things to Do When You’re Sick and Work Alone
It started as a crick in my right shoulder blade. In the next few hours, my hands began to ache. Then a full-blown headache let me know I wouldn’t be upright much longer.
Solo business owners cannot afford to become sick. You’re the chief cook and bottle washer, so if you’re not at a desk or wherever you get business done, the enterprise grinds to a halt. What do you do when that happens?
Here’s what I accomplished yesterday before a flu engulfed me at 6:00 pm, the time I usually get a second wind and return to the computer after dinner. Perhaps these five easy tasks are perfect for a day when you’re under the weather.
